Shimla, June 29 (IANS) The Congress Friday appointed former union minister Virbhadra Singh, who is facing corruption charges, as the chairman of party campaign committee in Himachal Pradesh in the run-up to assembly polls.

Congress state general secretary Kuldeep Rathore told IANS that the party high command has decided to appoint Virbhadra Singh to head the campaign committee. Singh resigned from the union cabinet Tuesday in the wake of a Shimla court framing corruption charges against him and his wife.

Virbhadra Singh is a popular Congress leader in Himachal Pradesh and the party may have taken this decision to use his influence on the voters, said a senior party leader.

The Congress leader was camping in Delhi with his loyalists since his resignation.
