Kolkata, Aug 19 (IANS) As the West Bengal government termed reports of recent rape cases as a rotten campaign against it, the Congress, a junior partner in the ruling alliance, and the opposition Left Front accused it of shying away from the reality.
By saying that the crime graph is much lower than that of other states, the state government is shying away from the reality. They should also stop blaming the media for reporting the rape cases. The state government should take measures to curb incidents of rape, said Congress MP Adhir Choudhury.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist-led Left Front expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation.
They are saying that law and order is fine but a few days back I came across an advertisement which requested women to carry chilli and pepper powder with them. So what was that for? questioned Leader of Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra.
Reacting to reports on the alleged spurt in rapes in the state, Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee Sunday denied that law and order situation of the state had slackened and termed the media reports as a rotten campaign against the government.
If you compare the law and order situation of Bengal with other states, then it will be clearly seen that the situation is much better in our state. Earlier too such kinds of things used to happen, but they were not reported. But now-a-days it is being reported in a big way, said Mukherjee.
The law and order situation is much better than what it was during the previous (Left Front) regime. This is a rotten campaign to malign the government, he said.
